Route description

Easy to access, this walk takes you around the pond. Observatories provide a discreet view of the birds and other species that frequent the site. The pond is home to many migratory birds.

Trail highlights

– The pond at Pulvérières.
– The great crested grebe, a bird with a slender neck, white cheeks, a blackish double hoopoe and, in spring, a ruff of red and black feathers adorning the sides of its head.
– View of the Chaîne des Puys.
– Wetland on a duckboard pontoon.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the parking lot, opposite the lake, turn left along the “sentier du grèbe huppé” (crested grebe path), cross the spillway stream by a passageway (information panel and view of the Chaîne des Puys). Turn right onto a path that skirts the lake (200 m to the right of the bird-watching station). At the end of the wood, cross a wetland area on a duckboard pontoon and join a wide path.

Step 2 : Turn right onto this path and follow it for 500 m until you come to a small path on the right (information panel).

Step 3 : Follow this path through the broom, passing behind an observation hut, skirting the pond and joining the road. Turn right to return to the start.

From the PRM parking area indicated by a sign, part of the crested grebe trail has been adapted for people with disabilities (Tourisme et Handicap certification for hearing, mental and motor impairments). The trail is around 150 m long, round trip, and leads to an observatory where you can observe the pond’s birdlife.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

In the direction of Pontgibaud, pass the Col de la Nugère and at the hamlet of Vauriat turn right onto the D50 to reach the Etang de Pulvérières. Parking lot at the rugby field.
