Route description

Easy to access, this walk takes you around the pond. Observatories provide a discreet view of the birds and other species that frequent the site. The pond is home to many migratory birds.

Trail highlights

– The pond at Pulvérières.
– The great crested grebe, a bird with a slender neck, white cheeks, a blackish double hoopoe and, in spring, a ruff of red and black feathers adorning the sides of its head.
– View of the Chaîne des Puys.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du parking, face à l’étang, prendre à gauche “le sentier du grèbe huppé” qui le longe, traverser le ruisseau déversoir par un passage aménagé (panneau d’information et vue sur la chaîne des Puys). Prendre à droite un sentier qui contourne le lac (200 m à droite poste d’observation des oiseaux). À la sortie du bois, franchir une zone humide sur un ponton en caillebotis et rejoindre un large chemin.

Step 2 : L’emprunter à droite et le suivre sur 500 m jusqu’à un petit sentier sur la droite “panneau d’information”.

Step 3 : S’engager sur ce sentier à travers les genêts, passer derrière une cabane d’observation, longer l’étang et rejoindre la route. L’emprunter à droite pour revenir au départ.

Depuis le stationnement PMR indiqué par un panneau, une partie du sentier du grèbe huppé a été aménagée pour les personnes en situation de handicap (labellisée Tourisme et Handicap pour les déficiences auditive, mentale et motrice). La longueur du parcours est d’environ 150 m aller-retour et permet d’accéder jusqu’à un observatoire à partir duquel il est possible d’observer la faune ornithologique de l’étang.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

In the direction of Pontgibaud, pass the Col de la Nugère and at the hamlet of Vauriat turn right onto the D50 to reach the Etang de Pulvérières. Parking lot at the rugby field.
