Route description

This large natural plateau is a 15-million-year-old basalt flow. The site is of great naturalistic and archaeological interest. Excavations have shown a continuous human presence from Neolithic times to the Middle Ages.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, reprendre la route sur 30 mètres, puis prendre le premier chemin à droite, direction Oppidum. À l’intersection, continuer à gauche et rester sur le chemin principal. À la bifurcation suivante, poursuivre à droite. 50 mètres plus loin, virer à droite vers l’Oppidum.
Aller à la stèle dédiée à Paul Eychart. La contourner (plan du Temple au dos de la stèle) et continuer à droite vers les vestiges des colonnes du Temple. Les longer, emprunter une sente à droite puis descendre tout de suite à droite jusqu’à un croisement en T.

Step 2 : Aller à droite puis, plus loin, à gauche. Rester sur le chemin principal. Au croisement en T, partir à droite et monter sur une butte (vue panoramique). Poursuivre jusqu’à la route.

Step 3 : L’emprunter à gauche. Au bout de 300 mètres, traverser à droite un espace dégagé. Cinquante mètres plus loin, prendre à gauche un large chemin. À l’embranchement, monter à gauche et accéder à un belvédère (vue sur l’ensemble Chaine des Puys Faille de Limagne). Revenir sur ses pas mais, à la hauteur de l’espace dégagé, continuer tout droit sur le large chemin en surplomb de la carrière jusqu’au premier chemin à droite. Le prendre jusqu’à la route et rejoindre à gauche le point de départ.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

Reach Durtol, 4km north of Clermont-Ferrand, via avenue Raymond Bergougnan, then the D943 (av. du Limousin then av. de Clermont).
At the entrance to Durtol, just before the cemetery, turn right onto Route de la Plaine, then Chemin de la Plaine. At the crossroads, turn right. Parking lot and start sign at the foot of the radio tower.
