Built in a meander of the Couze Chambon, between hillsides planted with vines and terraced orchards, the village of Champeix exudes a southern, wine-growing atmosphere. The winegrowers’ houses are brightly colored, and the red-tiled roofs are highlighted with gênoises.
The different quarters of the town reflect its history. The Marchidial district, set at the foot of the château, is the historic quarter. On the right bank of the Couze, the opening of the road from Besse to Clermont in the 18th century led to the development of the Place du Pré and Quai d’Aubary districts. In the 18th century, Champeix became the capital of the Tourzel marquisate. Mme de Tourzel is well known as the governess of Louis XVI’s children.
Today, the multitude of gardens, both ornamental and vegetable, has earned the town the title of garden city.
