In the past, on this remarkable site, there was a chapel containing a miraculous virgin. She had restored the sight of a passing shopkeeper. The Virgin has been the object of devotion ever since. In 1555, the new chapel was inaugurated to welcome Notre Dame de Vassivière. Since then, she has spent most of her time in the Church of Saint André in Besse, but spends the summer in her chapel in Vassivière. She is taken in procession to Vassivière on July 02, and returns to the church in Besse at the end of September (the Sunday following St. Matthew’s Day) : this is the Dévalade . And yes, just as the herds go off to summer pastures, so does Notre Dame.

Mass every Sunday during the summer at 11 a.m. and every weekday at 11 a.m. at the Chapelle de Vassivière.

How to get there
From the village of Besse, follow signs for Super-Besse. At the Lac Pavin roundabout, go straight on towards Egliseneuve d’Entraigues. The road to Chapelle de Vassivière is then indicated on the right.

From the Super station, park at Le Madalet and follow the signs on foot (2 km round trip).
