Dr. François Pommerol excavated the monument at the end of the 19th century, discovering human bones, pottery and flint fragments (after what remained of a pillage that certainly dated back to the Middle Ages).

The remains of human skeletons testify to the dolmen’s sepulchral function, and prove that the construction of this monument dates back to the final Neolithic period, the Chalcolithic (end of 3rd millennium BC).
Dimensions : it is still almost completely buried in a gigantic earth and stone tumulus. It measures over 8 metres in diameter and 2 metres in height. The 5 vertical pillars and the 10-tonne cover slab resting on them are made of basalt.
It has been a listed monument since 1862.

Access : from the hamlet of Saillant, take the D26. Access from the waterfall via a footpath. The dolmen is a 15-minute walk away in the meadow.
