Founded around 1130 by Aymeric, Bishop of Clermont, it was the seat of a priory of Benedictine nuns for over 600 years, under the authority of the Abbey of Moutiers de Thiers and the Congregation of Cluny. The church is typical of 12th-century Limagnais Romanesque architecture. The harmonious proportions of the choir, composed of three apses, are remarkable. It boasts some fifty well-crafted capitals from the same workshop as those in the Moutiers de Thiers abbey. Several of these capitals show the influence of Burgundian imagery.
