Located some ten kilometers south of Clermont-Ferrand, the Plateau de Gergovie forms a vast basalt table overlooking the Limagne and surrounding countryside. Perched at an altitude of 744 m, it offers a remarkable natural vantage point created by an ancient lava flow from the Chaîne des Puys, shaping a characteristic inverted relief.
An emblematic site in Arverne history, the plateau was a major oppidum in the 1st century BC, combining housing, political activities and defensive functions. It was here that Vercingetorix inflicted his only defeat on Julius Caesar during the Gallic War in 52 BC.It was here that Vercingetorix inflicted his only defeat in the Gallic War, giving the site a lasting reputation.
Beyond its historical legacy, Gergovie also boasts an exceptional natural heritage. Its eastern slope is classified as a Natura 2000 zone for the richness of its dry environments: limestone lawns, rare orchids, protected butterflies, reptiles and numerous species of breeding or migratory birds testify to the site’s great biodiversity. These sensitive habitats benefit from specific conservation measures
Last but not least, the plateau offers a spectacular 360° panorama, allowing the geography of Auvergne to be read at a glance. You can see the Chaîne des Puys – a UNESCO World Heritage site – the Sancy massif, the Forez mountains, the Limagne plain and, on a clear day, the Cévennes and the foothills of the Massif Central. This unique combination of landscapes, ecological wealth and history makes it one of France’s leading natural sites.
