Long a sparsely populated region, the Livradois lost many of its inhabitants in the last century due to the rural exodus. As a result, the region is now a quiet place where agriculture and forestry are the main activities. Nature plays an important role, allowing cyclists to cycle in a calm, shady environment.
And yet, the Livradois is full of surprises. First of all, the many breathtaking landscapes punctuate the loop. The area is also steeped in history, with the monks of the Cluniac priory at Sauxillanges owning numerous outbuildings. The Resistance has also left its mark on the area’s history, with many maquisards hiding out on these wooded uplands. Last but not least, the geology of this area is unique, with Europe’s largest vein of amethyst, a semi-precious violet stone.
