Route description

A walk at the foot of the Virgin Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde of Volvic, leading to the medieval castle of Tournoël. Numerous views over the Limagne cereal plain, the Monts du Forez and Riom.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Face au panneau de départ, sur le parking (forteresse médiévale), partir à droite (vue sur Riom, la plaine de la Limagne, les monts du Forez) dans un long chemin commun à deux circuits. Poursuivre en sous-bois jusqu’à une clairière.

Step 2 : Aller en face. À la fourche, prendre à gauche jusqu’à Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde (statue), (vue sur Volvic, les côtes de Clermont, le Livradois-Forez).

Step 3 : Revenir sur ses pas jusqu’au point 1. S’engager dans une sente à gauche sur le flanc du puy de la Bannière. Au croisement dans une clairière, descendre en face jusqu’à une intersection en T.

Step 4 : Virer à droite. À la prochaine intersection en T, à 50 m, obliquer à droite et rejoindre le point de départ.

Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.

From Riom’s west exit, take the D986 to Volvic, 5 km away. Avenue de la Libération, turn right onto Route de Tournoël. Parking lot at the foot of the château.
