Route description

The tour of the peak of Cluzel takes place on a small path that rises gently, following the slopes of the oak wooded peak. Throughout this hike, the views of the valley are many and varied.

Starting point – Go up the alley on the right of the church. At the first crossing, turn left and then immediately right. At the water trough, turn right and go up the path opposite. Continue the ascent on the main road to an intersection.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Monter la ruelle sur la droite de l’église. Au premier croisement, prendre à gauche puis immédiatement à droite. À hauteur de l’abreuvoir, tourner à droite et monter le chemin en face. Poursuivre la montée sur le chemin principal jusqu’à une intersection.

Step 2 : Descendre le chemin sur la droite. Au croisement en T, poursuivre la descente sur la droite jusqu’au village de Pradelle. À la route, partir à droite jusqu’à l’embranchement d’un chemin à gauche à la sortie du village (poteau transformateur).

Step 3 : Monter par ce chemin et le poursuivre jusqu’à un croisement en T. Descendre à droite (autre PR à gauche). À la fourche, rester sur la gauche. Continuer (dans le virage en S vue sur les grottes de Jonas et le Massif du Sancy) jusqu’à un pont en pierres.

Step 4 : Le traverser et descendre à droite. Longer le ruisseau (source d’eau ferrugineuse). À la route, tourner à droite passer le pont sur la Couze Pavin et tourner immédiatement à gauche. Monter dans le bois et rester sur le chemin principal jusqu’à une fourche.

Step 5 : Descendre à gauche (anciens fours charbonniers et au promontoire vue sur le pic de Brionnet, la chapelle Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel et les gorges de Gourgoul). Poursuivre sur le sentier (pailhats). À la route, partir à droite pour rejoindre le point de départ.

Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.

Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Champeix, south-west of Clermont-Ferrand, take the D25 towards Saint-Floret, then the D26 to Courgoul. Park near the church, go up the lane to the right of the church.
