Lac de Guéry

It is framed by the Banne d’Ordanche, the Aiguillier massif and the Tuilière and Sanadoire rocks. With a surface area of 25ha and a depth of 16m, it was created by a lava flow that blocked the course of a torrent coming from the puy Gros.
Auvergne lakes are usually of volcanic origin, but this one is also the result of ancient glaciations.
In the Quaternary, the Guéry area and the Massif du Sancy were covered by an ice cap. Today’s landscape has been shaped. Fragile areas were heavily eroded. The Lac de Guéry was formed in an overflow where water from the ruisseau des Mortes accumulated behind lava flows from the Puy Loup and Clef du Lac volcanoes.

Swimming is not permitted. Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Walking around the lake is a delight. It’s also the starting point for a number of hiking trails. In winter, the Nordic area offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails.

Fishing is also available. The lake is managed by the Fédération de Pêche et de Protection des Milieux Aquatiques du Puy de Dôme.

In winter, for your safety, access to the frozen lake is forbidden : it is formally forbidden, by municipal decree, to practice any activity on the partially or totally frozen Lac de Guéry, due to the risk of instability of the surface and the danger of falling into the icy water.
