Puy de Lassolas, culminating at 1,187 meters above sea level, and its twin, Puy de la Vache, are both monogenic volcanoes, i.e. they were born of a single eruptive episode, a strombolian eruption.
They form two cones of slag, ranging in color from red (for those exposed to the heat of the crater, which promotes oxidation) to black. Puy de Lassolas, in Auvergnat l’assourias, literally “the burnt”, is a basaltic volcano in the Puys chain.
