Starting from the Palisses site in Pont-du-Château, beneath the bridge spanning the Allier, the ‘From the Allier to the Cortal Plateau’ trail offers a multifaceted route. This very accessible walk combines the chance to discover a rich heritage of river transport with the tranquillity of the wild riverbanks and the agricultural hillsides.

Highlights of the walk :
• Pont-du-Château and its history : Explore the river transport town, its castle-town hall, its half-timbered houses and the remains of its former river port.
• The Cortal Plateau : Gain some height on this open plateau, which offers sweeping panoramic views of the Chaîne des Puys (UNESCO), the Limagne plain and the Auvergne region.
• The River Allier : Wander along the unspoilt riverbanks, discover the remains of an old mill and admire the Machal cliffs.
